Special Episode: Asher Muldoon on Irish Rep's 'The Butcher Boy'

On today's episode, Matt Tamanini is in conversation with actor and writer Asher Muldoon. Before Asher went out on the national tour of "Dear Evan Hansen," he began writing a musical adaptation of a fairly violent, surrealist novel that he read for a high school class called "The Butcher Boy."

It didn't take long for Asher to begin musicalizing the story and having worked  in the front of house at the Irish Repertory Theatre, Asher pitched the project to the Off-Broadway theatre, and fairly quickly began developing the show company. 

A handful of years later, the show is now receiving its world premiere with the Irish Rep and is being led by Nicholas Barasch. "The Butcher Boy" is currently slated to run through Sept. 11. 

Growing up in a narrow-minded Irish village in the 1960s, young Francie Brady lives in a comic book dreamland with his parents and best friend Joe, but all that ends when the Nugents – mother and son – move to town. After the haughty Mrs. Nugent denounces the Brady family as “pigs,” a violent obsession enters Francie’s world and only builds as the life he loves crumbles around him. When he cannot fight the dark forces any longer, the story spins to a catastrophic conclusion.
